Being a Multicultural Mutiracial Church: The Asian American Experience of Engaging LGBTQ Issues
a workshop at the Annual Meeting of the Northern California Nevada Conference of the United Church of Christ in Asilomar, CA on May 18, 2007

Through watching the film "In God's House: Asian American Lesbian and Gay Families in the Church" in this workshop, you will participate in a way of being in conversation as a multicultural multiracial church.

You will gain a concrete understanding of what it means to be a multicultural multiracial church, such as, why dialogue concerning sexuality issues need to happen in specific cultural framework and how this discussion happens at the intersection of race and sexuality.

You will also gain a better appreication of how people of different cultures negotiate differences differently, and how the gifts and strengths of Asian Americans have contributed to acceptance and diversity in a multicultural multiracial church.

Exploring race, religion and sexuality through videography
a workshop at Sonoma State University's Challenging Inequities: Traveling a Path of Social Justice in Global Education Conference on March 17, 2007

Filmmaker Lina Hoshino, Graduate Theological Union student and high school teacher Michael Campos, and PANA Program Assistant Lauren Q. showed In God's House during a workshop on addressing the sensitive issues of race, religion, and sexual orientation in the classroom for teachers and educators.

Following the film screening, Lauren shared about the importance of talking about sexuality in schools and churches, Mike talked about storytelling as a way of addressing silence around sensitive issues in API communities, and Lina talked about the use of video in the classroom. Participants engaged in a question and answer discussion about specific situations they were trying to address in their schools.

Blessing of the Families
an interfaith service at Pacific School of Religion on October 11, 2008

The NRJ Blessing of LGBT/Queer Families on National Coming Out Day was an API interfaith community celebration event that took place during the 2008 election season, when there was a Californian state proposition on the ballot to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry.

Through music, spoken word, ritual, testimonies, remembrance, blessing and prayer, the event connected LGBT concerns and API inclusive and intergenerational family values affirmatively, in an explicitly religious context. It was a meaningful, intimate and healing event for many.
