No on Prop 8 Counter-Rally (to the Yes on Prop 8 Rally)
October 12, 2008
Chinatown, San Francisco, CA

In February 2004, Chinese churches rallied on 19th Avenue in the Sunset District of San Francisco with t-shirts and signs that read "Marriage = 1 man + 1 woman". Progressive API organizations and churches responded with a rally in the same neighborhood that summer.

This year, with Proposition 8: Ban on Same-Sex Marriage up for vote in the November 2008 elections, Chinese churches staged another "Marriage = 1 man + 1 woman" rally. They chose Portsmouth Square, the heart of San Francisco's Chinatown, as the site of their rally. This time, we were better prepared. A strong network of LGBT-affirming API organizations and churches including API Equality, NRJ, Pine United Methodist Church, and Buena Vista United Methodist Church, held a simultaneous counter-rally in Portsmouth Square. We had an ethnically and age-diverse crowd with bilingual signs supporting same-sex marriage equality and LGBT rights. So this time, when the press covered the rally, there was representation of progressive API voices.
