NRJ 2nd Anniversary Party
October 11, 2007
Berkeley, CA

In the spring of 2004, Chinese Christian churches rallied on 19th Avenue in San Francisco's Sunset District with signs that read "Marriage = 1 man + 1 woman."

In the fall of 2005, we formed the Network on Religion and Justice for Asian and Pacific Islander LGBT people, recognizing that there was a particular need for an LGBT and LGBT-affirming, Asian and Pacific Islander, and religious voice.

Two years later...

  • We are meeting monthly as a network that includes representatives from a number of major Asian and Pacific Islander LGBT organizations, API pastors, and lay people!
  • We have organized the first ever religious-contingent to march with the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance (GAPA) in the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade!
  • We have marched in the San Francisco Pride Parade and tabled at the Pride Festival!
  • We have produced an award-winning documentary that has been shown internationally at film festivals and churches!
  • We have facilitated numerous educational workshops on the API LGBT experience and justice in churches at San Francisco Bay Area churches and conferences!
  • We have a website that includes a list of supportive LGBT pastors and congregations, sermons, and other resources!
  • We have held a press conference featuring 8 LGBT-affirming Asian pastors!
  • We have a listserve that includes more than 100 people!

So we decided to celebrate these accomplishments with a rockin' NRJ 2nd Anniversary Drag Party...

This year, on National Coming Out Day, we celebrated two years as the Network on Religion and Justice for API LGBTs!
We took the opportunity to renew our activist spirits with a slideshow highlighting the work of the past 2 years... some hot drag (there were prizes for the best costumes)...
... fine company... lots of music...
...and cake with a big frosting rainbow!

Happy 2nd Anniversary NRJ!

Thanks to everyone for all your passionate work in the last 2 years - giving testimony at churches and conferences, marching in the Lunar New Year Parade, helping to make the documentary we've been dreaming of for years, organizing and speaking at press conferences, designing t-shirts, and tabling at Pride for justice for all in our churches and in our world!

The work continues...!
