API Family Pride Celebration
August 26, 2007
Oakland, CA

Representatives from the NRJ attended the Asian Pacific Islander Family Pride Celebration once again this year. This year was API Family Pride's 4th annual banquet, which provides the opportunity for API LGBT people to publicly recognize family, friends, and community members who have proudly loved and supported them.

In 2006, API Family Pride Director Belinda Dronkers-Laureta invited the NRJ to nominate a person to their honor roll. It would be the first time an organization nominated anyone, muchless an API pastor!

So, last year, we nominated Rev. Lloyd Wake for his many years of justice work in the LGBT community, from performing holy unions for LGBT couples at Glide Memorial Church in the 1970s to blessing festival-goers at the NRJ booth at the SF Pride Festival today.

This year, we nominated Rev. Nobuaki Hanaoka, the pastor featured in In God's House: Asian American Lesbian and Gay Families in the Church.

His daughter wrote this piece about Rev. Nobu and her mom, Ayako Hanaoka.

API Family Pride continues to provide culturally-sensitive and language-appropriate resources for API parents of LGBT people and to celebrate the true meaning of family... yay for family pride!
